NEWPORT BEACH, CA—Pacific Hospitality Group has broken ground on the $40-million renovation of the Newport Beach Country Club here. The project will produce a completely new clubhouse and enhanced member amenities.
The design and construction team—which includes Melzer, Deckert & Ruder Architects Inc.; Driver SPG as general contractor; TynanGroup as construction manager; and CCA Planning for entitlement approvals—is planning a California coastal Craftsman-style design. Construction on the two-story facility is expected to take 12 months, in time for the 21st Annual PGA Champions Tour Toshiba Classic, scheduled for October 26 through November 1, 2015, at the NBCC.
According to Kevin Martin, principal of NBCC, “We started with an initial goal of designing a clubhouse befitting its signature Newport Beach location and complementing our beautiful golf course. Our vision for this long-awaited project has ultimately grown to building a clubhouse that will be an architectural icon in Newport Beach, and one that elevates us to one of the premier private golf clubs in California.”
A mixed grill, bar, banquet room, private dining room and flexible-space board room will occupy the upper level. Golf-related functions including a golf shop, men's and women's grillrooms and locker rooms and extensive outdoor patio dining will be located on the ground level next to the course. All service-related functions including golf-cart and golf-bag storage and cart repair will be located in the basement, significantly reducing the overall building footprint. The golf course will remain open throughout the construction period, and the club will continue to offer full-service operations in a temporary, upscale, members' pavilion.
The upper-level amenities will feature enhanced views through large glass-paneled windows. The windows and doors in the banquet room will open completely to the golf course on one side and the ocean on the other. All of the indoor areas will flow to the large upper-level terraces, and three sides of the building will afford 180-degree golf-course vistas.
A new dining room will accommodate 150 people and feature a 4,000-square-foot ballroom with 17-foot-high ceilings. Los Angeles-based Kay Lang + Associates will oversee all interior design. Indoor-outdoor areas and al fresco dining areas with fireplaces and fire pits are also planned.
Todd Pickup, principal of NBCC, says, “The new clubhouse will completely transform the country-club experience for our members. Our goal is to attract younger professionals and their families. The design, with its enhanced food and beverage venues, fitness facility and resort-style pool, appeals to this important demographic.”
According to Kory Kramer, chief investment officer of PHG, “We spent considerable time, energy and financial resources making this clubhouse a reality. Although one of the more challenging development projects we have led, given the multiple stakeholders involved, we thank the City of Newport Beach, the California Coastal Commission and the landowner for their approvals and look forward to creating a truly beautiful new clubhouse lifestyle experience.”
GlobeSt.com was unable to reach the principals involved to discuss why the project took so long to get going.
As GlobeSt.com reported in May 2013, the New Home Co. and Hillwood West, a division of Dallas-based Hillwood, partnered up to build 79 luxury, single-family, attached townhomes here. Named Meridian, it was the first new for-sale residential project in the Newport Center area next to Fashion Island in more than 20 years and Hillwood West's first venture into the Orange County market. Many residences in the project were slated to overlook the fairways of the NBCC.
