ATLANTA—Transit-oriented developments are gaining momentum in today's commercial real estate market. But Atlanta's original TOD is still making waves.
Peachtree Center hosts a dedicated MARTA rail station, regional bus station and on-site parking. It's home to office, retail and services.
GlobeSt.com turned to Dean McNaughton, senior director of leasing retail for Cushman & Wakefield, to get his thoughts on the topic in part two of this exclusive interview. You can still read parts one and two: Downtown Atlanta's Retail Scene Exploding and Why Downtown Atlanta Attracts Millennials.
GlobeSt.com: What about Peachtree Center, one of the first transit-oriented developments in Atlanta, makes Millennials want to work there?
McNaughton: Peachtree Center is Atlanta's original mixed-use transit focused development. The vision of John Portman was truly ahead of its time with its connecting sky bridges, walkways and a MARTA station within the development.
As MARTA expanded its service to Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport and the northern suburbs this made Peachtree Center even more desirable. Millennials actively seek vibrant sidewalks and public spaces, and Peachtree Center has both indoor and outdoor gathering spaces with a wealth of restaurants and retail.
Peachtree Center has also become host to a farmer's market during warmer months, bringing people together over a healthy and unique lunch environment. It's easy to enjoy a delicious and productive break when you have a multitude of local food and shopping options right there.
GlobeSt.com: On the heels of a successful 2015, what leasing goals do you have for 2016 at Peachtree Center?
McNaughton: An icon for over five decades, Peachtree Center is poised to transform itself in 2016, and leasing and a fresh new attitude will play an important role. The office leasing team is unveiling new tech-focused suites, and we hope to continue to attract passionate chefs and restaurateurs with local flare to our food area, as well as more and unique retailers, creating a diverse and exciting tenant mix for the people who live, work and play in and around the urban center. Most importantly, Peachtree Center's retail core will undergo a redevelopment and modernization project beginning later this year.
