Data Center activity

PLANO, TX—Data centers are springing up everywhere, and leasing agents are scrambling to keep up with demand. Recent examples show one center was just completed and one is underway. While Plano is seeing a great deal of that activity, the CBD is also getting into the act.

Provision Data Services, a provider of data center, colocation and interconnection solutions, recently opened its first data center located in the CBD located at 2020 Live Oak St. Currently, a Fortune 500 telecommunications company serves as the anchor tenant for the 137,000-square-foot data center, occupying 10,000 square feet within the 12-story structure.

In addition, Stream Data Centers has begun construction on its Ready-to-Fit data center in Plano's Legacy Business Park. The ground-up 145,000-square-foot structure is the provider's 10th data center project in Texas and is scheduled for completion in October 2017.

Aligned Data Centers, a division of Aligned Energy, also announced that Insight has signed a lease for power and space in its next-generation 30 MW 300,000-square-foot data center, also in Plano. Aligned Data Centers' intelligent infrastructure, capable of supporting mixed power densities up to 50kW per rack allows customers more control to quickly scale a data center within current space or when there is a need to provision more. Additionally, Insight receives the added benefit of operating in a mission-critical facility with an industry-low average of 1.15 Power Usage Effectiveness, flexible colocation services and substantial cost savings, including reduced operating costs associated with less water and energy consumption.

“Insight sets a high bar for technology and our new data center was no exception. We needed a partner to build a data center that would meet our current and future needs as we optimize our operations,” said Mike Guggemos, CIO at Insight. “We also needed a partner that understood our drive to help businesses run smarter. Aligned Data Centers provided the most powerful and efficient data center space that will allow us to enhance our capabilities for our clients.”

Insight was represented by Kirk Killian, president, Partners National Mission Critical Facilities.

Last year, the data center market saw big deals from major players, new economic and regulatory policy, and the wild card that is strategic cloud adoption. These factors are changing the rules of the game, from pricing models to location selection tactics. During the next 12 months, JLL expects to see user demand for smart data center solutions continue to climb, while operators will feel the heat to deliver more flexible data at a faster rate.
