NEW YORK CITY—In keeping with its trendy image, Trader Joe's is coming to the Lower East Side.
The city's newest outpost of the grocery chain will be located at 146 Clinton St.—on the corner of Broome Street—as part of the Essex Crossing development. Construction of the store is slated for completion in 2018.
A project of Delancey Street Associates—a joint venture of L+M Development Partners, BFC Partners, and Taconic Investment Partners—and in conjunction with the NYC Economic Development Corp., Essex Crossing is a 1.9-million-square-foot mixed-use development comprised of residential, commercial, and community space.
It is expected to feature 1,000 units of housing—half of which will be affordable for low-, moderate-, and middle-income households and senior citizens—and about 250,000 square feet of office space. A 70,000-square-foot block of commercial space will include Trader Joe's and a 22,000 square foot fitness center operated by Planet Fitness. Just to the north of the development, 15,000 square feet of open space is also anticipated to be complete by early 2018.
Essex Crossing also will offer The Market Line, a 150,000-square-foot marketplace spanning three blocks. Consisting of over 100 vendors and anchored by a new home for the historic Essex Street Market, the Market Line will be one of the largest markets in the Western Hemisphere.
In addition, the complex will boast a Regal Cinemas movie theater, a Splitsville Luxury Lanes, NYU Langone's Joan H. and Preston Robert Tisch Center at Essex Crossing (a community center run by Grand Street Settlement) and a rooftop urban farm.
“Throughout the planning process, the community made clear that a quality, affordable supermarket was a top priority for the neighborhood – and we made a commitment to deliver that,” says S. Andrew Katz, a principal at the Prusik Group, the partner on the development team in charge of Essex Crossing's retail space. “We're thrilled to deliver on that promise today.”
Adds NYCEDC president Maria Torres-Springer, “Bringing Trader Joe's to Essex Crossing will help provide families across the Lower East Side with quality, fresh food options in their neighborhood. Increasing food access is yet another way the Essex Crossing project meets the needs of current and future residents.”
“We've seen too many headlines about affordable supermarkets leaving Manhattan neighborhoods, so it's wonderful news that Trader Joe's is opening a store at Essex Crossing in the Lower East Side,” notes Manhattan borough president Gale Brewer. “All our neighborhoods need access to markets with fresh, healthy, affordable food, now more than ever.”
