The Bloomington City Council has joined the City of Richfield, the Richfield Housing and Redevelopment Authority and the Minnesota Department of Transportation in supporting the construction of a new Penn Avenue bridge over Interstate 494. The bridge had been planned prior to the decision of Best Buy to relocate its corporate campus to Richfield from its current headquarters in Eden Prairie, MN, but it wasn’t expected to start until after 2010 as part of the widening of I-494.
Best Buy will contribute an estimated $11 million or more in property taxes from its new campus, and that allowed the project to be moved up, according to Richfield officials. Also, the additional traffic resulting from Best Buy’s campus increased the need for the new bridge.
