Industry sources say Ross Stores has an option to buy 193 acres for an estimated $8 million or $41,451 per acre (95 cents psf). The land is south of the Carowinds Boulevard interchange for Interstate 77 in York County, SC.
The property is owned by a group of investors who acquired it a decade ago. Ross officials have not commented on the land purchase.
Using the code name Project Falcon, Ross searched numerous Charlotteregion counties for a site, which will eventually employ roughly 1,000people.
The discount chain wants to open stores in the Charlotte area as part of its Southeast expansion plan. The Newark, CA-based company has 360 stores, primarily in Western states.
