City and county officials are mailing, faxing and E-mailing letters to national developers, hoping to interest them in working on the area's Center City 2010 Vision Plan for a revitalized uptown. Of special development interest are 11 acres in the 700 block of North Tryon Street and six nearby acres. The 11-acre site is occupied by the Hal Marshall Service Center.

The Vision Plan projects a mixed-use village of speciality shops, service retailers such as grocers and pharmacies, cultural facilities, restaurants, residences, offices and a movie theater.
