Westin Hotel to Adjoin Midfield Terminal

ROMULUS, MI - A 400-plus room hotel plan approved for the new 97-gate Northwest terminal at Detroit Metro Airport.

Starwood Hotels and Resorts Worldwide Inc., based in White Plains, NY,won a recent contract recommendation from Wayne County to build a newnine-floor, $80 million hotel connected to the future Northwest AirlinesMidfield Terminal at Detroit Metropolitan Airport.The county department of airports, along with Northwest, is recommendingStarwood and Darryl Berger Cos. Inc. to design, build and operate a new400-plus room Westin Hotel under a 15-year management agreement.Starwood edged out Marriott Hotels and Resorts during the two-year conceptplanning and solicitation of interest, according to Lester Robinson,director of the airport.

The recommendation is subject to approval by the Wayne County Commission.The body will hear the recommendation as early as next month, and the hotelcould open as early as December 2002.The $1.2 billion Midfield Terminal, featuring almost 100 gates and 80 shopsand restaurants, a silent automated transit system and 11,000 structuredspaces, is due to open in December 2001.
