The 33-member Greater Downtown Development Strategy Task Force has been meeting since May to draft a downtown revival plan. They say instead of subsidies, they will provide developers freer reign in the new downtown design while still seeking a satisfactory mix of office, retail and housing space.

In total, 2.4 million sf of office space is currently under construction in the area, with more on the way. About 483 residential units are being built, with an additional 783 units proposed. An estimated 20,820 people live in San Jose's downtown. The San Jose Redevelopment Agency says there is 1.1 million sf of retail space available in the area.
