In fact, the facility has run far into the red, to the tune of $175 million over budget. Construction costs requested by both the airport and airlines have pushed the total cost of the terminal and two boarding areas from an estimated $850 million to $1.025 billion.
This week, San Francisco's airport commission voted to pay merchants in the terminal $8.2 million to cover costs incurred by pushing back the terminal's opening date. It will now open six to eleven weeks after the original Sept. 26 date.
Merchants will also receive compensation for losses and overhead costs beyond the $8.2 million. Of the $8.2 million, retail tenants will receive $5.1 million and restaurants and bars will get $3.1 million.
