New Battle Looms for Tustin Marine Base

ORANGE COUNTY, CA-A senator pledges to renew efforts to help Santa Ana take 100 acres of closed base for schools. Tustin wants to sell the land for commercial development.

ORANGE COUNTY, CA-A Santa Ana state Senator says he’ll resurrect a bill in the California state Legislature that would force neighboring Tustin to give up 100 acres of the closed Tustin Marine Corps Air Facility to build new schools.

Tustin officials say they have already opened about one-third of the closed 1,600-acre base for various public projects, including schools, homeless shelters and parks. The city wants to sell the 100 acres that Santa Ana is seeking to developers in order to raise cash-money that would offset revenue that was lost when the base was closed during the 1990s defense cutbacks.
