Based in Westborough, American Superconductor has acquired 34 acres of land for $2.95 million from MassDevelopment, the state investment bank and development agency overseeing the base conversion. The agency has also won major commitments from such companies as Gillette, Parker Hannifin and CeCorp.

With an ability to expand the facility to 500,000 sf, officials say the American Superconductor plant could be the largest built in the state in more than a decade. The Codman Co. of Boston represented American Superconductor. Cutler Associates has been selected to develop the building.
