A 44th building has survived, but may not last much longer. The vacant American Steel & Wire mill, which dates to 1872, is being targeted for a new use--and most likely razing--in the wake of an RFP issued by Mercer County officials.
One plan has been floating around: Last fall county executive Bob Prunetti and developer Bart Blatstein jointly spelled out a plan for a $14-million entertainment and retail project. But politics have gotten in the way and the county appears ready for Plan B. While the entertainment/retail complex is still the preferred use, other uses aren't being ruled out.
Proposals are due by October 15th.
