The Redwood Room is slated to reopen next summer under the ownership of hotelier Ian Schrager, the owner of a swanky hotel chain and founder of the legendary Studio 54. Schrager will keep the bar's trademark redwood paneling, but some say that the near-total renovation will alter its character.
On Tuesday, bar amenities such as paintings by artist Gustav Klimt and the bar itself will go up on the auction block. The Redwood Room, located at 495 Geary St., opened in 1935, two decades after the Clift first opened its doors to serve visitors attending the Pan-Pacific Exposition.
