The new structure, which will cost approximately $500,000 to build, will be named Ditter's Town Square as a memorial. Still, the town is losing its only egg-and-milk stop, and a historic building to boot. The nearest grocery store is now two miles away in Stayton.
Dixie Barth, who bought the building from the Ditter family with her husband, Guy, doesn't know yet who the tenants of the new structure will be. She hopes someone will be interested in opening a little general store inside with a deli.
The Ditter Family, which opened the store after arriving on a railroad car in 1890, sold it twice but then bought it back after the buyers' businesses failed. They sold it to the Barths in 1995.
