"There are a few zoning changes that are needed, but I expect final approval tonight or tomorrow," says Joe Napolitano, director of community development for the city of McHenry. He says the 95-acre project, which will straddle Illinois Route 31, will be the largest retail development in the city's history.
"It's been two years in the making," says Napolitano. "Terraco was the initial developer for for the 27 acres on the west side of Route 31, but Rubloff bought them out."
Arthur Rubloff & Co. of Hoffman Estates, IL will develop the sites for Home Depot and Meijer and is near finalizing a sale of the land to both companies, Napolitano said. "It's my understanding these companies have policies about owning their own real estate."
Home Depot and Meijers will open huge superstores on the east side of Route 31, which at 67-acres is the largest part of the development. Rubloff will own and manage the 27 acres on the west side of Route 31, which will be known as McHenry Towne Center and will be anchored by such tenants as Circuit City, Office Max and Petco.
