BALTIMORE-Published reports reveal that a late-night demolition attempt on a century-old building here has been stopped by local preservationists. The plot thickens, however, in that the acreage is being eyed by Marriott International, which reportedly had its sights set on a 125-room Residence Inn.

The building is actually one of two that the hotelier would need for its asset, but local preservationists are bucking the project and had already taken the case to court, claiming that the bit of local history. One of the buildings once served as the headquarters for the Merchants & Mines Transportation Co. while the other was home to Sun Life Insurance Co. A temporary injunction stopped the late-night activity.
