The Fujitsu acreage, bought from Hillwood Development Corp., is situated across the street from a 100-acre holding in the Shiloh Business Park, where the corporation is now in its 16th year at the site. The acreage will be developed into additional corporate offices and research and development facilities for its Synchronous Optical Network transmission products, expansion of a Photonics Lab and added space for a growing service business.

Construction plans and design are undetermined for what is being described as "an aggressive expansion plan." A corporate source told GlobeSt.com the purchase has taken place now to prevent the possibility of getting landlocked to the degree that supplemental operations would have to be located apart from the existing 834,000-sf campus. "The primary objective was to get the land and then go from there," says the Fujitsu source.

"With the rapid depletion of large tracts of commercial land in Richardson, particularly in the Telecom Corridor, we saw this acquisition as critical to the growth of our business," says Ron Martin, Fujitsu's COO and executive vice president. "This purchase reflects Fujitsu's commitment to the future of our company, to the city of Richardson and to the Telecom Corridor."

Fujitsu has doubled the workforce at its Richardson manufacturing and development center in less than five years, now employing 3,300. The expansion guarantees additional jobs for the region, the source told GlobeSt.com. The Fujitsu corporate campus is one of the largest of the 700 companies operating in the Telecom Corridor. The corporation's presence, says Mayor Gary Slagel, "reinforces Richardson's international reputation as a leading hub of the global telecommunications industry."

Fujitsu maintains engineering centers in Raleigh, NC, Acton, MA, Pole River, NY, and San Jose in addition to nationwide sales and customer services offices. Its other US manufacturing sites are located in Gresham, OR, and Anaheim, CA.

The Richardson operation is part of The Fujitsu Group, founded in 1935 in Kawasaki, Japan, which still functions as the corporate heart of the telecommunications giant. The Fujitsu Group consists of 500 companies and affiliates worldwide, employing 188,000 people in 100 countries.

Fujitsu Network Communications designs and manufactures fiber-optic transmission and broadband switching platforms, develops telecommunications software and provides network design, installation and maintenance services. Its products are tailored to local exchange carriers, interexchange carriers, competitive access providers, cable TV operators and large private networks in North America.
