The land is adjacent Kaiser's existing 28-acre campus, which holds buildings totaling 481,881 sf. The company has said it may sell the campus, but also has expressed interest in retaining the property as an income-producing investment.

The first phase of the project, a medical office building, is slated to break ground in early 2001 and open two years later, with hospital facilities opening in 2006. Kaiser will keep its existing hospital open during construction of the new building, tentatively planned to include 350 beds.

Kaiser's first area open-heart surgery program will be housed in the new complex, the idea for which was born in early 1990s, when Kaiser first bought the land. Kaiser is also planning new construction in Vallejo and Redwood City.
