Funding a New Stadium Gains Ground with Voters

PHOENIX--Plans to build a new stadium is gaining favor with voters, according to a new poll. The project would require a $335-million tax hike

PHOENIX-The issue of whether to raise taxes to fund a $335-million professional football stadium is gaining favor with voters.

Earlier polls had voters squarely opposed to the new stadium for the Arizona Cardinals, but the latest poll indicates its dead heat between those who oppose and favor Proposition 302. Results from a phone poll of 588 Maricopa County voters showed that 46 percent oppose the plan, while 44 percent favor it. An additional 10% are undecided.

Proposition 302 would add new taxes to hotel rooms and rental cars to fund a new stadium, for Cactus League expansion, youth and amateur sports facilities and more tourism funds. The Arizona Cardinals and the National Football League would contribute $85 million toward the cost of building the stadium.
