The provision is part of a pending bill that is a part of the fiscal2001 Department of Interior appropriations. This year, the Truman buildingwas the only Missouri structure to receive federal historic preservation funds.The building honors Harry Truman, an Independence, MO resident, and the33rd President of the United States, who served from 1945 to 1953.
Independence will need to raise $350,000 to complete the project. Salestax from the city will raise $1.75 of the $4 million needed. A contractfor the restoration work will be awarded Monday.
