Castle Group and Avalon Bay Communities Inc. are converting the 95-year-old Del Monte Plant No. 51 into 450 lofts and apartments. The plant sits on downtown's edge off the Alameda and was once operated by the California Fruit Packers Association. That group later became Del Monte.
The first units are expected to be available in spring 2001.
