Barbara Jirza, manager of public and community relations for museum, says a total of $16 million went into the purchase of the land and construction. The remaining $7 million will go toward the interior furnishings, technology and programs, with $1 million set aside for operating expenses.

The museum was designed by Steven Holl, a New York architect who grew up in the Puget Sound. The museum is located at the corner of NE 6th and Bellevue Way Northeast. The museum's old headquarters was in 10,000 sf of space on the third floor of the Bellevue Square mall.
