Architectural design, done by Kansas City-based Rafael Architects, is100 percent completed and 75 percent of the construction documentation,completed by contractor J.E. Dunn Construction, is finished. Ground isscheduled to be broken late this year and take about 16 months tocomplete.

The 24,000 square foot addition will quadruple the size of the existingcenter. Currently, center staff members work from seven differentbuildings in the West Side neighborhood. They will continue to work fromthe various locations, but operate certain programs from the newGuadalupe Center.

Among the new programs will be a culinary arts program designed to helpstudents find job placement. The center will also be home to the seniorsprogram and a new cultural arts program. The cultural arts emphasis willinclude an exhibit space, classrooms, performing arts area and resourcecenter.

``This is a much needed facility,'' said Carmen Lopez Palacio,development director.``It will alleviate some very crowded conditions.The goal of the cultural arts center program is to foster Latino pridein our heritage and to inform the community at large of the culturalcontributions of Latinos.''

The new building will connect with the old via a ``calle,'' which willbe constructed as an indoor walkway with an outdoor street atmosphere.It is located at 1015 Avenida Cesar E. Chavez Blvd.
