County Goof Delays $1 Bil Mixed-Use Project

ORLANDO-Bureaucrats issed a state-mandated deadline to begin new road construction for the 1,500-acre Campus Crusade for Christ headquarters site in southeast Orange County. Now the county can't collect a $1.7 million grant Florida had previously set aside for the job.

ORLANDO-It’s the sort of thing that would have been grist for a Rube Goldberg cartoon. The Florida Office of Tourism, Trade and Economic Development had awarded Orange County $1.7 million to pay for road improvements at the planned $1 billion, 1,500-acre Campus Crusade for Christ mixed-use development in the county’s southeast quadrant.

All the county had to do to get the money was to break ground on Moss Park Road by June 1997 and finish the work by December 1998. But nobody bothered to check the calendar. The deadlines came and went.

The goof surfaced when county commissioners noticed they had a vote coming up next week on the project’s expansion plans. Besides its 300,000-sf headquarters building, the relocated California religious organization plans to build 500 hotel rooms; 2,700 multifamily and single-family units; at least 100,000 sf of retail; and a new headquarters building for another religious group, Wycliffe Bible Translators.
