The new Federal courthouse was designed by the architectural team of Richard Meier of New York and Phoenix-based Langdon Wilson Architects.

The courthouse, at the corner of Fourth Avenue and Washington, features a vast 126-foot-tall atrium on its north side. The bright-white building stands in sharp contrast to most of the other buildings in Downtown, which borrow their exterior colors from hues of the desert environment--reds, tans and browns.

The courthouse features 18 courtrooms and judicial chambers for the US District Court and the US Magistrate.

The opening was more than eight months overdue, as construction on the unique design lingered through the summer.
