The live-work-play project planned for the 140-acre former Atlantic Steel site could have been derailed by a neighborhood suit over traffic. Instead, residents and Jacoby Development Inc. came to an agreement after more than a year of often heated negotiations.
The agreement provides $200,000 for a traffic study in and out of the neighborhood; $150,000 for a separate study of traffic within the neighborhood; and $2.8 million for traffic relief within the community. In return, Ansley Park will drop its lawsuit to stop the bridge construction.
At issue was the traffic that residents anticipated would pour through their historic neighborhood as a result of the bridge that will cross the Downtown Connector (I-85 and I-75) and link Atlantic Station with Midtown at 17th Street.
The first traffic study will begin after approval on the bridge plan from the US Environmental Protection Agency, expected by the end of the year.
The second study is likely to begin early next year. Bridge construction could start in the third quarter 2001 and is expected to be completed, along with the first phase of the development in early 2003.
