Supermarkets account for about 5% of gasoline sales nationwide, but not for long. In addition to Safeway and Albertson's, Fred Meyer, Wal-Mart and other big name stores are adding gas stations to their properties around the nation.

Safeway has about 25 gas stations in operation, and plans to have 60 in the U.S. and Canada by the end of the year. Customers can use their Safeway Club cards for discounts. Albertson's first gas station opened in Idaho three years ago. It now has 114. They go by the name Albertson's Express. Fred Meyer is in Alaska and Idaho with FM Fuel Stops, and is reviewing sites in Oregon and Washington.
