A public hearing is set for Monday on a proposed 80,000-sf casino with 850 slot machines, 42 card tables and restaurants near state Route 76. The project would be much smaller than those proposed by the San Pasqual, Rincon and Pala tribes.

The details of the proposal are in a draft environmental impact study required under a compact between the tribe and Gov. Gray Davis in the wake of voter approval last year of Native American gamingestablishments.

The proliferation of casino projects has caused alarm among county officials who fear the projects' impact on traffic and the environment.
