As part of its first-ever official development plan, Stanford agreed to protect its 2,000 acres of surrounding foothills for the next 25 years. But Simitian wants half of those foothills protected for 74 more years, an idea that the rest of the supervisors say they need more time to investigate.
The school, Palo Alto's largest and arguably most high-profile landowner, first made the expansion proposal for its 8,000-acre campus two years ago. Stanford wants to expand its developed property by a third, adding four million sf of new development over the next 10 years. New facilities would include student and staff housing as well as nearly two million sf of academic buildings.
