SEATTLE-Seattle’s Landmark Preservation Board has given historic status to the Van Vorst warehouse at the south end of Lake Union, changing the plans of Bellevue-based Vulcan Northwest and Kirkland-based Schnitzer Northwest, which are 50-50 partners in a proposed 500,000-sf office development on the site. The building was to be razed for open space between two buildings slated for either side of the warehouse at 415 Boren Ave. N. Those building will now likely have to be set back from the building, possibly forcing other site changes or shrinking the buildings. Two other proposed buildings aren’t affected by the ruling.

Suzi Morris, investment manager for Schnitzer Northwest, says the company expected the decision and has contingency plans, though she was not ready to release them . “What we really want to do is get the buildings built and leased and go on with life. The two proposed buildings (flanking the Van Vorst warehouse) will be slightly impacted, but this is not going to render the project infeasible. We will just have to come up with a solution that incorporates the warehouse in the best manner possible, she says.”
