SUNOL, CA-A group of activists here are trying to stop a 242-acre mining quarry proposed for near Downtown. Save our Sunol has filed suit against the city and county of San Francisco, the legal owner of the site on which Mission Valley Rock Co. proposes to build the mining operation. Sunol is located on the easternmost edge of Silicon Valley off of Interstate 680. The suit will be discussed before the San Francisco Board of Supervisors later this month.

Mission Valley already maintains a mining presence on the southeast side of Sunol, but activists say development near their historic downtown could be environmentally hazardous. Local winery Elliston Vineyards has said it wants to lease much of the land for vineyards. But staff members at a Public Utilities Commission hearing last month claimed the vineyards would not generate as much revenue for the town as the quarry, which is estimated to bring in more than $1.5 million a year.
