Mission Valley already maintains a mining presence on the southeast side of Sunol, but activists say development near their historic downtown could be environmentally hazardous. Local winery Elliston Vineyards has said it wants to lease much of the land for vineyards. But staff members at a Public Utilities Commission hearing last month claimed the vineyards would not generate as much revenue for the town as the quarry, which is estimated to bring in more than $1.5 million a year.
