Kansas Speedway is a $250 million project located on 1,250 acres at thejunction of Insterstates 70 and 435 in western Wyandotte County. It willinitially seat 75,000 fans, with the design such that the spectator areacould be doubled. The owner of the racetrack is International SpeedwayCorp. of Daytona Beach, Fla.
``We are delivering such a speedway for the 75,000 fans to enjoy thebest attributes from ISC's other racetracks including the storiedDaytona International Speedway,'' said Terry Flanagan, project managerfor planning and design for the speedway and vice president with HNTBCorp. of Kansas City. ``These attributes include superior sightlines,convenient ingress and egress and a streamlined flow from parking lotsto the open and air grandstand and its 68 suites.''
HNTB Corp., the DLR Group and Turner Construction Company are workingwith nearly 45 consultants on the project. Turner Construction has usedmore than 150 contractors and estimates suggest that 2,000 constructionjobs have created a payroll of more than $50 million.
The Speedway opens July 7-8 with a NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race, aDayton Indy Lights Championship Series Race and an Indy Racing NorthernLight Series race. A second racing weekend is scheduled for Sept. 29-30with the NASCAR Busch Series, Grand National Division, and a NASCARWinston Cup Series race.
Studies revealed that the economic impact that the racetrack generatesfrom the two racing weekends will be more than that of a Super Bowl,Final Four and Major League Baseball All-Star game combined.
