The interior of all three terminals at KCIA will be rehabbed. More than35,000 sf will be added and the number of entry doors will beconsolidated. Improvements will also be made to the HVAC and electricsystems and new baggage belts and ticket counters will be added.
"The beauty of the work to be done at KCI is that it will be done insections to minimize the inconvenience to the passengers and airportusers," says Joe McBride, spokesperson for KCI. "Our airport is veryconvenient in that you can drive to within 75 yards of where you willboard the plane. It is imperative that we communicate with the publicthat this work is going to take place so that they may plan ahead."
Plans are being made to add 15,000 more spaces in the satellite parkinglots, building on the existing 9,450 slots. Also proposed is theconstruction of an automated people mover system and a consoliatedrental car facility near the three terminals.
Funding for a multitude of construction projects at the airport isnearing $900 million. The terminal improvement project is joined by a$395 million airport revenue bond that was passed this year and otherFederal grants and retained earnings.
Two airlines that have a significant impact on KCI will benefit from therenovation. Trans World Airlines has an overhaul base at the airport andis the beneficiary of $165 million to overhaul the maintenance facility.Midwest Express, based in Milwaukee, will be nearly doubling itsoperations at the airport. The airline plans to add one hold room andfive jet bridges by 2003.
Burns & McDonnell is serving as the project manager. HNTB and CDFM2 areworking on design.
