Museum Posits Expansion Plans

KANSAS CITY, MO - Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art to expand with five free-form glass buildings

KANSAS CITY, MO – An impressive addition to the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art was revealed this week by the museum’s curators. The new addition was designed by architect Steven Holl of Steven Holl Architects of New York City. Holl created an expansion that will comprise five free-form glass buildings that are placed both above and below ground. The glass structures will run 840 feet along the east side of the museum, which was built in 1933.

Construction on the museum’s first-ever expansion is expected to begin in the spring with the building of a new 450-space underground parking garage on the north side. The building expansion is expected to be completed in 2005. The museum will be expanded by more than 60%, from 234,000 sfto move than 376,000 sf. The expansion will mean 142,500 sf of galleries and public facilities including an art library and cafe. The museum’s permanent collection area will be more than doubled.
