Power & Light District backers and developers, including Regents Partners of Atlanta, still have rights to a 10-block area surrounding the Power & Light Building, but Mayor Barnes has indicated that she wants to start work now so that if the area is free and clear next year, the urban village concept can take shape.

Included in the newest set of plans for downtown is the construction of a full-service supermarket, which Downtown currently lacks, another class A office building, a convention hotel, green space and the creation of more than 10,000 housing units between the Missouri River and Country Club Plaza. Among those units, Mayor Barnes is calling for 3,000 units to be built along the central business district, where the heart of the Power & Light entertainment district was to have been.

The Midtown Marketplace shopping center, at Main and 31st Streets, is soon to be completed. Other retail businesses and renewed housing efforts are expected to follow the center's opening.

Also called for in the new development plan is a means to connect established areas such as the 18th and Vine historic jazz district, a few blocks east of Downtown, with areas such as Crown Center, south of Downtown and located next to Science City and the up and coming Freight House District.

Mayor Barnes said she wants to enlist several developers who can create a 24-hour city.
