KANSAS CITY, MO-Now that the city council has essentially taken plans for the Power & Light District off the table, there is a new focus for Downtown. Mayor Kay Barnes has announced that she would like to see the creation of urban villages in the city’s core.

Power & Light District backers and developers, including Regents Partners of Atlanta, still have rights to a 10-block area surrounding the Power & Light Building, but Mayor Barnes has indicated that she wants to start work now so that if the area is free and clear next year, the urban village concept can take shape.

Included in the newest set of plans for downtown is the construction of a full-service supermarket, which Downtown currently lacks, another class A office building, a convention hotel, green space and the creation of more than 10,000 housing units between the Missouri River and Country Club Plaza. Among those units, Mayor Barnes is calling for 3,000 units to be built along the central business district, where the heart of the Power & Light entertainment district was to have been.
