Kimpton to Turn Historic Warehouse Into a Hotel

SAN FRANCISCO-The Kimpton Group has announced plans to renovate the 91-year-old Haslett warehouse located at San Francisco’s Fisherman’s Wharf into a 268-room hotel. Kimpton recently signed a 57-year lease with the National Park Service, which owns the historic building. Maritime Hotel Associates LP, a wholly owned subsidiary of San Francisco–based Kimpton, will rent the four-story, 198,000-sf building. The yet unnamed hotel is expected to open its doors in mid to late 2002.

The red brick Haslett warehouse, which originally stored canned fruits and vegetables, was vacated in 1986 due to earthquake safety concerns. Kimpton plans to invest $37 million to convert the warehouse, including a seismic upgrade of the building. In addition to the hotel, the renovated structure will include a visitor’s center and a maritime history museum.
