"I promised to reduce taxes and I have done that despite an increased burden from the state and federal governments of almost $55 million,'' said Spano. "At the same time we are investing in the future of our seniors, our children and our environment. We have accomplished all this while securing our long-term financial stability. I truly believe we are a model for other counties.''
Among a host of proposals for the County Board of Legislators to consider, Spano noted the success of the county's Office of Economic Development. He stated it has helped reduce the county's office availability rate from 16.5% in 1998 to 11.9% at the end of the third quarter 2000.
In addition, the County Executive is proposing that the Office of Economic Development incorporate the Westchester County Convention and Visitors Bureau into its office. Currently, the bureau operates under a contract with The County Chamber of Commerce and has its operations housed at The County Chamber's offices at 235 Mamaroneck Ave. The Westchester Convention and Visitors Bureau has been the chief agency responsible for promoting the county's hotel and tourism industries.
