USAA.com, a consumer high-tech transaction site, is one of the top 25 "one-to-one" Web sites, according to Stamford, CT-based Peppers and Rogers, an international consulting group. USAA has been particularly recognized for its consumer privacy efforts, according to Jonathan Brookner, One to One Online research director. "It's one of the clearest and most straightforward, as well as being most protective of consumers' data," he says.
USAA, launched in March 1999, provides a range of self-service applications. Its members include insurance, banking and investments professionals. In 1999, an estimated 470,000 registered users hit the site 8.7 million times. The company claims about 75% of all brokerage transactions are being handled via USAA.com, with the balance relying upon telephones or an automated TouchLine system. USAA, founded in 1922 for military families, is one of the nation's leading insurance and financial services companies, owning or managing assets in excess of $61.7 billion.
