"We have a huge customer base and we need to have facilities to support our customers," Eileen Elam, UMC's spokeswoman, tells GlobeSt.com. "Boston is a good high-tech hub and Waltham is the high-tech hub of the Boston area."

The office here will serve as a sales office and a customer support center. The company is looking to grow its client base in this area and anticipates doubling its office here by next year. In a released statement, Jim Kupec, president of worldwide marketing and sales for UMC USA, said, "The Boston area offers a strategic geographic location for us to increase our customer service support for the Eastern United States. Not only is the region well-established in our major target industries, including consumer electronics and communications, but it is also the ideal location to facilitate the building of new relationships in the Eastern United States and Canada. This presence will provide increased opportunities for better interactions with new and existing customers coast-to-coast."

UMC operates seven wafer fabrication plants in Tawain's Hsinchu Science Park. In addition to the company's two US locations, the company has offices in Japan and the Netherlands.
