The project will be Mission Valley's second quarry in Sunol. The first runs along Interstate 680. Elliston Vineyards initially wanted to lease much of the 242 acres for grape growing, but the PUC determined in October it would not bring as much revenue as the quarry.

Earlier this fall, a Save our Sunol activist filed a lawsuit in Alameda County Superior Court to block the quarry, but nothing has come of it yet. For five years, residents in Sunol, CA have battled against a proposed quarry, which will be located across the street from Sunol Glen Elementary School. They worry it will be an unattractive addition to this small town off Interstate 680, and say it poses a health threat to students and an environmental threat to the nearby Willis Polk Water Temple.
