SUNOL, CA-San Francisco’s Board of Supervisors this week gave a collective thumbs-up to the Mission Valley Rock Co.’s plan to develop a 242-acre granite-mining quarry near here. The quarry is slated for Alameda County land owned by San Francisco’s Public Utilities Commission. Mission Valley signed a 40-year lease for the land, and will pay the PUC an estimated $52-$64 million as part of the deal. The funds will help finance water-system improvements.

The project will be Mission Valley’s second quarry in Sunol. The first runs along Interstate 680. Elliston Vineyards initially wanted to lease much of the 242 acres for grape growing, but the PUC determined in October it would not bring as much revenue as the quarry.
