Key Family Firm Leaving NC for SC

CHARLOTTE-Locally-based Employee Benefits Services, a subsidiary of the Key Family of Cos., plans to move its 200-employee headquarters to Rivercrossing, a 150-acre, mixed-use project being developed in York County, SC.

CHARLOTTE-Employee Benefits Services, a subsidiary of the Key Family of Cos., plans to build a 60,000-sf building in the 150-acre, mixed-use Rivercrossing development under construction in York County, SC. The project is being developed by Charlotte investors John Crosland, chairman of Crosland Group Inc. and Henry Faison of Trammell Crow Co. The investment group bought the land in 1998 from the Kaiser family for $5.2 million.

A timetable and construction costs for the new headquaraters building hasn’t been determined. Key had originally planned a $35 million, 300,000-sf campus to be used as a regional headquarters in Waterford Business Park, Rock Hill, SC. The first building in the complex was to have been an $18 million home for Employee Benefits Services. But Key later cancelled those plans, saying that a new telecommunications system allows many of its employees to work from home, reducing the need for office space.
