Suits Filed Over Cisco Campus After Talks Fail

SAN JOSE-The City is being hit with lawsuits this week alleging that Cisco Systems' planned 688-acre Coyote Valley Research Park will be environmentally harmful and should not have been approved.

SAN JOSE-Following a breakdown in settlement talks with city officials here, the City of Salinas has joined other nearby cities in suing San Jose over its approval of a 688-acre development proposed by Cisco Systems, the city’s largest employer. In its lawsuit, Salinas is alleging that an environmental impact report on the 20,000-worker campus does not adequately address concerns. Also filing suit for similar reasons are the Sierra Club and the Santa Clara Valley Audubon Society, as well as the Association of Monterey Bay Area Governments, which represents 18 cities in three counties.

If built, the $1.3 billion campus would easily be Cisco’s largest. It was approved in October by the San Jose City Council, but has been dogged by controversy ever since first proposed. San Jose Mayor Ron Gonzales has been a vocal backer of the campus, which is proposed for land in North Coyote Valley that the city has long been planning to use for expansion of its light industrial base.
