"The university's goal is to achieve, wherever possible, the integration of sustainable principles in the building of its new Concord campus, as well as its academic curriculum," says Charles Glasser, university president. While a number of universities and colleges in the United States have partially "green" campuses, officials at JFK University believe that the new campus will be the first in the country to employ "green" principles in constructing an entire campus.
The five-acre site on which the campus will be built is located within walking distance of Concord BART on Galindo Avenue in Downtown Concord. The university plans to start construction in early 2002 and be open for classes in the fall of 2003. The campus will include five schools--liberal arts, management, law, psychology and holistic studies.
Glasser has been working closely with a number of leaders in "green" design, including Jim Quinn, president and CEO of Collins Pine Company, and JFK U's Alumnus of the Year in 1998. David Orr, head of the Environmental Studies Department at Oberlin, David Ford, president of the Certified Forest Products Council and Bill Browning of the Rocky Mountain Institute also are working with Glasser.
"Once constructed," says Glasser, "The new John F. Kennedy University in Concord will serve as a beacon of environmental sustainability throughout our community and throughout higher education in the nation."
