Green Campus Development Coming to East Bay

CONCORD, CA-John F. Kennedy University says the branch campus it will develop here will be the first built from the ground up using only those methods and materials considered environmentally friendly.

CONCORD, CA-In developing a college campus here, John F. Kennedy University plans to become the first university in the country to be designed completely using “green principles.” The design will use environmentally friendly materials for the construction, interior furnishings, as well as the campus’ water and energy needs.

“The university’s goal is to achieve, wherever possible, the integration of sustainable principles in the building of its new Concord campus, as well as its academic curriculum,” says Charles Glasser, university president. While a number of universities and colleges in the United States have partially “green” campuses, officials at JFK University believe that the new campus will be the first in the country to employ “green” principles in constructing an entire campus.

The five-acre site on which the campus will be built is located within walking distance of Concord BART on Galindo Avenue in Downtown Concord. The university plans to start construction in early 2002 and be open for classes in the fall of 2003. The campus will include five schools–liberal arts, management, law, psychology and holistic studies.
