ST. PAUL, MN-Suburbs that don’t measure up as far as providing more affordable housing will risk losing funds for transportation projects starting next year, the Metropolitan Council determined Wednesday. That same approach will also be taken when it comes to distributing money to other community needs, such as parks and open space, according to the state agency responsible for metropolitan-wide issues in the Twin Cities. The council will also lobby the Minnesota legislature for up to $230 million over two years in affordable housing funding.

One in five households in the region is “paying more for housing than they can reasonably afford,” says Ted Mondale, chairman of the Metropolitan Council. That’s because a housing market driven by the strong economy has pushed housing prices beyond the reach of too many metro area families, the council says. If this shortage is not addressed, the region’s economy and quality of life will suffer and the social costs associated with families in distress will climb, according to the Mayors’ Regional Housing Task Force, which presented its findings and recommendations to the Metropolitan Council.
