The building is part of Catellus' hallmark development - a $4 billion project - that will include 5 million-sf of office space, more than 6,000 residential units and up to 70,000-sf of retail shops. In addition, the project will also include a 500-room hotel, parks and recreational amenities and the new life sciences research campus for the University of California at San Francisco.
For nearly two decades, Catellus has faced opposition to the project from local community groups. But after donating land to the University of California and adding thousands of affordable housing units and 50 acres of open space, the company was able to break ground on Oct. 23 on the first apartment building.
